Lhosar being celebrated today
Lhosar, the cultural festival of the Tamang community under the Mahayan sect of Buddhist religion, is being observed across the nation Tuesday.Lhosar festival is celebrated by the Tamang, Sherpa, Gurung, Magar, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangba, Bhote, Dura and Lepcha community as a new year. However, the Gurung, Tamang, Sherpa and Bhote community observe the festival in different times of the year.This Sonam Lhosar observed by the Tamang community is a farewell to the cat year and a welcome to the falcon year.During this festival, the daughters and sisters are invited to receive blessings along with exchanging of greetings amongst one another.
This festival that originated in China is now also observed in Singapore, Mongolia, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Bhutan, Laos, Myanmar and Japan.The Government has announced a public holiday on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar. Meanwhile, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has extended heartfelt greetings to all Tamang brothers and sisters on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar.
In a message of best wishes, President Dr Yadav has expressed the confidence that festivals like these would help unite the nation amidst diversity.In a similar message, Vice-president Parmananda Jha has wished that this festival inspire us all to move ahead with consensus and understanding for constitution making, the peace process and prosperity of the nation.Likewise, Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has described Nepal as a meeting point of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural characteristic, and expressed the view that festivals like these have helped maintain unity and social tolerance in the Nepali society.Leader of the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, Mr Ram Chandra Poudel has also expressed the confidence that this festival of Sonam Lhosar would help enhance mutual goodwill, friendship and resolve obstacles facing the peace and constitution making process.
